Stage 3:

Term One: Newcastle in War time – A historical look back

This Term the students are investigating Newcastles involvement in the World Wars. The students can choose to investigate elements that cover Newcastle’s people and their involvement, the port itself, and the local indigenous people and their involvement.

Stage 2: The people and the land – The importance of nature to indigenous peoples

Students will be investigating the story ‘The Rabbits’ by Shan Tan and how this story covers many themes that relate to our own colonised history. Students will investigate the powerful relationship native peoples around the world have with their land and tradional ways of life.

 

Stage 1: Space  – The Final Frontier

Students will investigate the Solar system, Planets and objects found within our realm of the universe.

 

Early Stage One:

Term 2

 

 

We finish our show bag assignment next week, with many students creating well thought out, quality pieces of work:)

For weeks 6-10 we will be doing debating workshops as part of the library program to allow those seasoned and beginner debaters the chance to practice and further develop their skills.

 

 

 

 

Year 5 and 6 – Show bag Assignment, Term 1

This assignment is what the senior cohort will be working on during their 40 minute sessions in the library each week. Although I encourage the work to be completed in the library, those who want to do some of the tasks as homework are more than welcome.

Due: Week 11 Term 1.

Library Show bag – Stage 3 Term One Mini assignment

Task: Create a show bag advertising, explaining and exploring one of the chosen senior stories from the below list (show bag to be provided).

All the books explore life during the World Wars, especially what life was life for our ANZAC force during this time and why those fought so dearly to preserve our valued way of life.

 

Aim: To explore how stories can communicate the hardship of life throughout war time eras and research the factual elements of the stories themselves.

This unit of work links to the Stage 3 history and geography units of Australia as a nation. Through it we explore the freedoms we all share because of the sacrifices made during the World Wars to protect our way of life and the lives of so many communities who now enjoy and peaceful life here in Australia.

 

Your show bag is to include the following elements:

  • A newly designed front cover that you decide captures the elements and emotions of the story (5 marks)
  • A small 3D diorama cube (net to be supplied) depicting a key scene or event in your chosen story (10 marks)
  • A one page research report that supports the events depicted in your story and explains the history behind the book. Include important dates, heroes to mention, major battles, a map or diagram showing important places and events, impact on the war (15 marks)
  • A one page book review (template to be provided) outlining the books importance as a historical memento and why students should read it. (15 marks)
  • An acrostic poem using an appropriate word that best describe the emotion of the story e.g. sadness, loss, freedom, determination, liberation, hardship, perseverance etc. that describes the books contribution to remembering those who have fought and died for our and others freedom around the world. (5 marks)

Term 2

Our Neighbours – Investigating Indonesia

This Term as part of the History and Geography units of work, the students are using elements of  the inquiry learning process to develop investigations surrounding Indonesia and Australia comparisons.

Aim: To distinguish the differences and similarities between the life and land in Indonesia and Australia.

The tasks are:

Engage Phase – Complete the worksheet that explores the important geographical features, population statistics and social aspects of the two countries (completed over weeks 1-4). Collect 5 fun facts that you never knew about our neighbour Indonesia.

Explore and Identify – Select a further area of interest, that further explores Indonesia, generated through your engage phase activities.

Devise 3 questions to further investigate:

They may focus on any of these areas:

Religion

Geographical Features

Customs/Celebrations

Foods

Housing

Transport

Economy (how the country makes its money)

 

Find the information and display it in your chosen form (e.g.. slideshow, poster, Glogster)

Stage 2 Research assignment

The lore of the land – A look at indigenous Australia’s relationships with the land

Task: To investigate the relationships and ways in which the traditional custodians of our land survived  before settlement.

Project requirements:

Choose one of the following aspects:

  • Native plants uses
  • Creation myths and legends
  • Caring for the land
  • Develop 3 questions you would like to investigate in your chosen area using mind mapping IPAD software. 
  • Using print and digital information research your questions and synthesis facts found into your own words.
  • Display your information in slideshow form using PowerPoint software.
  • Include one diagram in your poster created using word
  • Include a bibliography using the given format

Term 2

This term the students will be investigating ways of past, present and future communications.

The students in Year 2 will be  looking at communication inventions and tools  from the past and how they have helped the world develop.

Aim: Students develop the understanding of how technology has impacted how we communicate.

Task:

Select One of the following communication forms:

Carrier Pigeon

The Pony Express

Fax

Email

The first cell phones

Telegrams

Morse Code

 

Identify 3 questions that you would like to find out more about.

Questions to ask look like this:

When was it made?

Who invented it?

How did it change the world?

Where was it invented?

How much did it cost?

 

Using the books and internet sites given to you navigate these and try and find the answers to your questions.

Present your information in poster form.

Students will record their answers using Microsoft Publisher to create a poster/elements for their poster.

Share your poster with the class.

 

 

Year 1

 

Year 1 are investigating toys of the past and their materials.

Task:

Aim: To use resources found in the library  to build understanding about what has influenced children’s play through time.

Select a Toy to investigate.

Choose 3 of the following question to investigate:

 

When was it made?

Who made it?

Who was it made for?

What was it made from?

Where could you buy it?

How much was it?

How was it made?

Why was it made?

 

Students are to use the supplied sites to source their answers.

Students will record the websites and books they use to create a resource list.

Students will create a poster and use the iPad to record the presentation of their poster.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Humble Bumble project

 

Aim: Students are to develop an understanding of the important relationship animals and plants with nature.

Task: Students investigate the role of  the bumble bee in nature. Students create a 3D model of the bumble bee, explaining its important attributes and behavioural characteristics.

Students will:

Create an A4 poster paper explaining the role of the honey bee as a pollinator and describe this process. This will be published using a word document and include one graphic. 

Create a 3D bumble bee labelling its importance features. 

Develop a 1 minute advertisement using the IPAD movie making software demonstrating the conservation strategies we can use to support the survival of the bumble bee.
